The Long Island Maritime Museum is located on the historic West Sayville waterfront. The Museum grounds, once part of the the Meadowedge Estate of Mrs. Florence Bourne Hard, is now comprised of fourteen acres and five historic buildings.

The Great South Bay was once home to the most productive oyster industries in the United States. Take a look at that industry and the families who made it work, as well as what happened to it and aqua- culture in the Great South Bay today.

In the days of dead reckoning and no electronic aids to navigation, it is small wonder that ships, sometime having been at sea for more than a year, often ended up on the island's barrier beaches. Weather, chance and human error conspired to make the waters around Long Island a "shipwreck valley."
